Step 1
Heat a large heatproof frying pan over moderate heat. Add the meatballs and cook for 4-5 minutes or until lightly brown.
Step 2
Add the garlic purée or paste and cook for 1 minute, then add the chopped tomatoes or passata. Season to taste, reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
Step 3
Meanwhile, cook the gnocchi according to the pack instructions with the broccoli or peas. Drain, reserving a cupful of the cooking water.
Step 4
Tip the gnocchi and the vegetables into the sausage mix, add a little of the reserved cooking water, if required to loosen the sauce.
Step 5
Mix well and scatter over the cheese.
Step 6
Transfer to a preheated, moderate grill and heat for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is golden.
Step 7
Serve the gratin with a crisp salad.
If preferred replace the gnocchi with cooked pasta shapes or use frozen broccoli florets instead of fresh and simply add with the cooked gnocchi.
